For sale is a special item.A Jewish Faith Capbadge. One of I am led to believe only around 10 made, as that was around the number of actual Jewish faith chaplains in The Briitish services . The capbadge is base metal with Silver plate (Slight ares showing through but 98% silvered). It has Blue emamelling in the Star of David. Alongside this item is a group of 30 Photocopied documents From the War Department, showing that the badge was asked for by the Senior Rabbi in the British Army Mr Dayan M.Gollup in early January 1940. The Rabbi contacted the War Office to ask for a special badge of similar size to that worn by other faiths to be worn by his chaplainsin order that they could be instantly recognised.
The Paper trail starts with the Rabbi`s request and sketch of what he would like and goes right through the different departments in the War Office, then through to Buckingham Palace where the King approves the design on 25th May 1940. Then to the point of being accepted for use by the War Department and then being ordered to be made at J.R.Gaunts & son Ltd, on June 17th 1940. (The gaunt paperwork shows the order for the Dies to be made for the Capbadge (that is for sale) also the Die for the Collar Badge (not for sale). also the order for just 1 capbadge and 2 Collar Badges.
I have been in contact with the previous owner and he told me that as a collector of Religious Badges, he had been on the trail of this item for several years and had tracked it down to a Jewish collector in Canada. It took him many months according to his emails to get the fellow to sell it to him. It was the original collector who confirmed that he was only aware of one other example in existance (another Canadian Collector) and that as far as he could ascertain that only in the region of 10 of these items were ever produced as that was the amount of chaplains employed by all Brittish services at that time.
The person who last owned it before me told me that the only reason he parted with his beloved collection was because he was desperate for money to pay for private medical bills for his very sick daughter.
This is a very rare item. I do not think you will find another one. If you do please let me know and I will amend this advert. If you require more photos email me.

What is this web site all about

logo125This site comes from a simple idea that the major sites that allow you to sell your items seem to make charges that are simply over the top, on this site there will always be a free listing and you can renew it free as well, that's our policy and we will stick to it. There is a small charge if you want to put your advert on for a longer period, make it bolder or a priority listing, but that's up to you.  The site exists to give sellers a shop window and to link buyers to sellers.

We don't get involved in the sale itself, sellers and buyers can do the deal between themselves.
